ThunderCats backgrounds for N900

by Mika Valkama on Feb.02, 2010, under Dev

Still haven’t gotten around to set up Maemo5 SDK, but had a creative spark today and created couple background sets with ThunderCats theme.

First off is panoramic view of Third Earth locations and couple of our heroes. The source images were quite messy, but I tried to clean them up a bit. Turned out quite nicely except for the castle Plun-Darr part.

Second one is more stylish =) Just the cat’s head logo on one desktop, rest of them having just deep red background.

Both of the files are zipped archives which contain the background images and a configuration file. That config file might appear hidden in unix like systems as its name starts with a dot. Just transfer all five files into Images directory of N900 and you should get a new Background Set onto list.

I won’t be uploading these to N900wallpapers.com, but if you haven’t been there, go take a look. They are also working on a wallpaper management application, which sounds interesting.

798 Art Zone, Beijing 2009.03.01

Array

Back in Beijing after a little break and while thinking of ways to stay awake after flight, college suggested visiting 798. Had heard about it quite a few times but never visited as for some reason I thought of it as being far away. In reality it was relatively short taxi drive from Gongti Beilu, but one thing became apparent right after stepping out of taxi – we should have planned the excursion a bit, the area is huge! For more photos, check my set in Flickr, the ones needing editing are not there yet.

Mobile Dev Camp, Helsinki

Mobile Dev Camp Helsinki

Spent the day at Vanha where first Mobile Dev Camp in Helsinki was held. I was only present for the presentations and left just when the BarCamps were starting. I wasn’t expecting anything miraculous, but having just watched some TEDTalks, I couldn’t but feel that few little things could have improved the experience (like spotlight for speaker and someone keeping a check on the volume levels).

ZOMG!

by Mika Valkama on Feb.17, 2009, under General

This is probably a very cold day in hell. For years I have counted blogs to be something only lazy people use, you know, the ordinary people who can’t code their own publishing systems. But when a friend asked for help on exporting his blog, I started playing around with WordPress and soon the idea of giving blogging a try didn’t feel so alien anymore. So today I switched my site frontend to WP instead of handcrafted pages.

The uneasy feeling of not fully understanding how this system works haunts me a bit and being more of an Java guy, PHP doesn’t make this any easier. But having browsed through bunch of documentation, I feel like I can bend WP to my liking. First priority is create my own theme and see what I can do with MobilePress to get some old functionality back.

Another slightly worrying thing is that I yesterday spent some time checking out Macbooks in Verkkokauppa.com. Luckily we don’t have Starbucks in Helsinki…

Right…

Seems that I’ve managed to get WP somewhat properly installed and most of the configurations tweaked to my liking. Now I just need to come up with something interesting and witty to write about.
